Being physically active
We have over 25 years’ worth of delivery experience in creating a practical insight into how best to enable young people with learning disabilities and their families to access and benefit from physical activities. Our experience serves to enable our Lifeworks College Students, Lifeworks Saturday community groups and our young people in Lifeworks residential care to increase their opportunities in all sports for young people with learning disabilities. Our Lifeworks activities give young people the chance to make and meet up with friends, improve their health, try new activities and support to achieve their best futures
Connect with other people
At Lifeworks we strives for young people with learning disabilities to feel included, confident and to help the local community to become more inclusive. The social trips away from home with friends are important for the young people we work with, helping both them and their family to believe that they can do it. Lifeworks offers young people with learning disabilities a chance to make friends, experience the new, take the lead, get involved in community life and most importantly have a great time. We offer supported activities and trips, helping members make friends, develop life-skills whilst having the best time
Learning new skills
Research shows that learning new skills can also improve your mental wellbeing by boosting self-confidence, raising self-esteem and helping you to build a sense of purpose and helping you to connect with others. At lifeworks we recognise we are all unique, we will support you to use your experience to become part of the community in which you live. Our key goal is to provide opportunities for learning so that the young people we care for are confident and equipped to enter their adult lives with more independence and opportunity. Through the achievements they make with us and the skills they develop, they will better understand themselves and where they are headed.
Giving to others
Acts of giving and kindness can help improve your mental wellbeing by, creating positive feelings and a sense of reward, giving you a feeling of purpose and self-worth, and helping you connect with other people. At Lifeworks we are lucky that our students and the other young people we care for are always looking to give back. It’s simple – using their time to give something back feels amazing. Over the years they have raised money for Children in Need, Devon Air Ambulance, The Dravet Syndrome UK as well as helping volunteering at some of fundraising and activities events.
Paying attention to the present moment (mindfulness)
Paying more attention to the present moment can improve your mental wellbeing. This includes your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you. Some people call this awareness “mindfulness”. Mindfulness can help you enjoy life more and understand yourself better. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges. There is a strong person-centred culture at the services we provide and people receive individualised care and support from staff who know them well.
